What is agate?
Agate is a variety of translucent banded chalcedony – a microcrystalline quartz – named after the Achetes River in Sicily. Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas, often with crystalline druzy growing over the layers of agate.
The healing power of both precious and semi-precious gemstones is a long-held belief in both Eastern and Western cultures. Gemstones and crystals have been used to make healing amulets and ornamentation dating back to Babylon, and through the ancient Greek and Egyptian civilisations.
Agate has traditionally been used to balance energy, enhance creativity, provide protection, speed healing, calm the senses and generally provide physical, mental and emotional good fortune. It's believed to be a 'good luck' stone, said to enhance longevity. As far as relationships go, agate is believed to be a stone of marital and romantic fidelity.
